Dennis Walder was born and brought up in Cape Town, and is a graduate of the Universities of Cape Town and Edinburgh, where he was a Research Fellow and completed his PhD. After a long career writing teaching materials and making radio and TV broadcasts for the Open University he is now Emeritus Professor of Literature. He has published numerous reviews, articles and books on 19th and 20th century literature, including Dickens and Religion, Athol Fugard, Post-Colonial Literatures in English, and the bestselling critical reader Literature in the Modern World. His most recent book is Postcolonial Nostalgias: Writing, Representation and Memory (Routledge, 2012). He was a panel member for the Commonwealth Writers’ prize in 2011. He is an editor of the Journal of Southern African Studies, he is a published short story writer, and he is currently working on a memoir.
